Why independence matters
Every major BMS manufacturer employs a sales force whose job is to position their platform as the right one for your project. Their evaluation will, predictably, conclude in their favour. Spektris has no commercial relationships with any platform vendor, takes no referral fees, and holds no partner agreements that would bias a recommendation. That independence is the most valuable thing this service offers.
The evaluation framework
Technology selection on a building services project typically involves four platforms competing across five or six dimensions — and most evaluation processes collapse under their own complexity. The Spektris framework uses a structured scoring matrix: technical fit (protocol compatibility, I/O flexibility, licensing model), commercial terms (total cost of ownership over five years, support terms, upgrade path), market position (installed base, UK support presence, BTL or equivalent certification), and risk profile (single-supplier dependency, exit costs, data portability). Every shortlisted option scores against the same criteria.
Protocol compatibility and interoperability
For most UK commercial building projects, the non-negotiable baseline is BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP/RTU support. Any platform that can't natively communicate with these protocols, or that requires a proprietary gateway for every integration point, is adding cost and risk before the project starts. Beyond the baseline: DALI-2 support for lighting, MQTT for IoT sensor backhaul, and Haystack or Brick Schema tagging for analytics readiness are the next tier. These aren't wishlist items — they're the difference between a system that can be extended in three years and one that has to be ripped out.
Total cost of ownership modelling
Upfront hardware cost is rarely the real cost. The variables that determine five-year TCO: software licensing model (per-point versus per-site versus subscription), support contract terms, certified engineer availability in the UK, upgrade costs as the platform evolves, and exit costs if the system needs to be replaced. Spektris builds a comparative TCO model for every shortlisted option so the recommendation is defensible at board level, not just technically convincing.
Spektris has no partner agreements, referral arrangements, or commercial relationships with any platform vendor evaluated through this service. The recommendation is financially neutral.
Supplier due diligence
Technical capability is necessary but not sufficient. Supplier assessment includes: UK market presence and support infrastructure, financial stability, certified installer base, hardware lifecycle commitments, and how the vendor handles protocol updates or firmware dependencies. A platform that is technically excellent but has two UK-certified installers and a support team in a different time zone is a project risk, not a solution.
