Technical training session for smart building, BMS, and IoT teams

Why most technical training doesn't stick

A two-day course delivers information. A structured programme that runs against real projects, reinforces concepts in weekly sessions, and tests understanding against live scenarios builds capability. The difference shows up six months later when an engineer can configure a BACnet gateway from scratch, not just remember that BACnet exists. Spektris training is designed to produce the second outcome.

Who this is for

Three audiences most commonly engage this service. M&E contractors whose teams are increasingly expected to commission smart lighting and IoT sensors on every project, but whose engineers were trained on wiring and mechanical systems. BMS system integrators who need to extend their capability from traditional DDC programming into LoRaWAN sensor integration, edge platforms, and cloud analytics. FM teams who operate complex building systems daily but have never had formal training on what the BMS is actually doing, making fault diagnosis slow and maintenance reactive.

Programme structure

Training is structured in three phases: foundation (understanding the system architecture — what each protocol does, why it's there, what the gateway actually bridges between), application (hands-on configuration against real hardware or a simulated environment), and integration (applying skills to a live or realistic project scenario under guidance). Each phase ends with a practical assessment, not a multiple-choice test.

Subject areas

BMS fundamentals

  • BACnet object model and network architecture
  • Modbus register mapping and function codes
  • DDC programming concepts and sequence of operations
  • Controller hardware — I/O types, wiring, commissioning tools
  • Site surveys and network verification

IoT sensor networks

  • LoRaWAN — gateway placement, device provisioning, payload decoding
  • Bluetooth Mesh — node types, network keys, gateway bridge configuration
  • IAQ sensors — calibration, drift, accuracy specifications
  • Data pipelines — MQTT, REST API, cloud platform connectivity

Smart lighting controls

  • DALI-2 bus architecture and addressing
  • Group and scene programming
  • Bluetooth Mesh for lighting
  • DALI/BACnet gateway configuration
  • Emergency lighting gear types and test modes
